whole house assessment method
red's Whole House Assessment Method gives you costed options to radically reduce the energy use of your building.
First tried out as an idea when working on projects with for the Sustainable Housing Action Partnership, we came up with the idea of using the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) to build an energy model of the houses that we could then amend to calculate the impact of changes to how the house worked.
Originally intended to assess new buildings, there is a reduced data version (rdSAP) that generates your Energy Performance Certificate but this is too simplified to be sufficiently accurate. This approach was used to calculate the changes required for the Retrofit for the Future competition looking at how possible 80% reductions in energy use and CO2 emissions actually was. Of the nine houses we advised on, three were selected for a study comparing the various approaches. They outperformed all but one of the other thirty homes analysed in the follow up report Retrofit Revealed. The success of this approach led to us developing a much more complex version for Carbon Co-op and urbed in 2012.
This is still in development - we are making it work with cost models so that we can reduce wastage and improve costing accuracy.
